Landing in Liberia

Most visitors to Potrero fly into the Liberia (LIR) airport. Depending on the driving route that you take, the drive from LIR to Villa Vista Paraiso should take approximately 1.5 hours. The proximity to the airport is part of why we love this area. Be sure to download the Waze App, as it is the most reliable mapping app in Costa Rica. The airport has grown exponentially over the years to accommodate the many visitors to the gorgeous coastal areas. You will find an air conditioned immigration and customs area, various restaurants and shops.

Read on for our tips in navigating the Liberia airport and the driving trip to Potrero.

AIRPORT

Some planes will drop you right at an indoor gate, while others will drop you onto the tarmac. Either way, we always change into lighter clothing before landing. Lather on some sunscreen and be sure to have water. If you are dropped off on the tarmac you could find yourself in a line outside. This can be HOT or RAINY depending on the season.

Once inside and through the line, be prepared to provide the immigration officer with your location during the stay (Villa Vista Paraiso in Potrero) as well as your departure date.

There is a “cambio” to exchange money at this point. You do not need to use it. We would advise that you travel with a few small American bills for tipping. Use your credit or debit card during your trip. Most places in Potrero accept American money and you can also go to an ATM for the best exchange rate. So, initially, having Costa Rican Colones is not vital. I you would feel better having some, then go ahead and use the Cambio and know that it isn’t the best exchange rate out there.

After you have passed through immigration, you gather your luggage. The luggage is typically removed from the moving belt and so you will look through luggage lined up on the ground. Find your luggage and continue to the exit.

On the way out, you will have your luggage scanned one more time through a security machine.

When you exit the airport there will be MANY people offering rides and shuttles. What you do from here is dependent on your next transportation. Perhaps you rented a car, maybe you have a private transportation lined up. Most people in Costa Rica are friendly and willing to help you find your way! If someone helps you with your luggage or to get settled and on your path, it is customary to tip a few dollars or $1000 - $2000 CRC.
